This week we picked new groups and new topics about science fiction. We also had to be in new groups that could not have any people that we had in our last group in our new group. This new group consists of me obviously and Kaliegh. We chose to do time travel for our 6 week multi genre project. This week we learned that for the multigenre project we needed to pick different activities to do in regards with our topic which as stated earlier is time travel. For our project we also had to have a big question, and for our group we chose to do, how time travel affect the future, or does it not matter whatsoever. For this we are looking at different time travel theories that deal with theoretical physics and actual physics.(http://abcnews.go.com/Technology/story?id=98062) |

This week we read short stories that pertain to our theme of science fiction, which is life on other planets. Due to this a new part of our definition on what science fiction is was added. Even though having super advanced alien life is considered stereotypical, it appears so much in this genre of writing that it must be included, it is a stereotype for a reason and that reason is that it has to be apart of the main definition of science fiction (http://www.cnet.com/news/astronaut-reveals-that-aliens-have-better-technology-than-humans/). We as a group only have one more short story to read along with finishing our novel story. As the weeks go on there is a stronger bond forming in our group, which in all honesty was pretty strong to begin with. This is a good thing because it is going to make our big project next week easier to do, and achieve a better score than if we hated each other. The further along we get the more pinpoint our definition of science fiction is. At first it was along the lines of oh aliens have to either visit earth or we visit them, However, the definition has narrowed to the encounter to alien life has to have conflict, and that the humans have a distinct disadvantage weather it be physical or technological, This week we went off on our own to discover what science fiction was in regards to our theme. The group chose to discover how life on other planets can define what science fiction is, Mr. Shoenborn let us go do what we wanted, in regards to what assignments we get done and in what order we get them done.
I find this type of learning to be very amazing. We get to do what we find interesting and at our own pace. However, even though we are alone we still get tons of help from Mr. Shoenborn and it really helps us out. Unfortunately, a couple items on the list mainly the "Demon with a Glass hand" Outer limits episode did not quite fit with our theme of life on other planets. Even though yes it did technically have aliens in it, it was still set on earth and it was more about time travel than it was about aliens. Overall, however this has been a great week and it looks very promising going forward. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D_Ao7EKTNiA&noredirect=1 |
